I had heard of Chekhov at high school, but never got around to reading his plays until my first year at uni. I can distinctly remember reading it during a student union musical (I was a stage hand), and one of the actors coming up to me and asking me who Chekhov was. I remember thinking he mustn't have done much theatre before.
